Author's Introduction - Blog Post 1

Written & posted 1/1/08: The above are from Michaelangelo Buonarroti's 1508 paintings in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, Rome, and depict the events of this passage of the Book of Numbers:

The King James Version of the Bible, The Book of Numbers, Chapter 21: " Verse 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Verse 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. Verse 8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that everyone that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. Verse 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. . . . "

The passage above, by some accounts, refers to the story behind the origin of the symbol of medicine. Of the various forms this symbol takes, each has its own separate history and appellation (here meaning "name"), i. e., the Nehushtan, the Rod of Asclepius, and the Caduceus.

According to today's Wikipedia, a 1992 survey of American health organizations found that 62% of professional associations used the Rod of Asclepius, whereas in commercial organizations, 76% used the Caduceus. Citing: Friedlander, Walter J., The Golden Wand of Medicine: A History of the Caduceus symbol in medicine, Greenwood Press (1992). __________________________________________________
